A scanning electron microscope (SEM) at Arizona State University (ASU) is set up so it can be accessed remotely over the web from one or more external locations. The SEM can image objects at over 100,000 times magnification, allowing nanoscale features to be observed.
The remote location will only need a computer with internet connection and a free app to connect to the SEM. It is helpful though to also have available a webcam as well as a microphone and speakers (particularly in a classroom setting with a number of students), since the web connection can provide 2-way audio and video communication. A user at the remote location uses a computer mouse with a scroll wheel to change the focus, magnification, contrast, etc. of the SEM image in real-time. A member of the NCI-SW team at ASU will be at the SEM to facilitate the session.
A variety of samples are available to meet the interests of different audiences. The list includes microchips, nanowires and nanoparticles, and insect specimens.
