ASU’s Open Door

OpenDoor2018
Professor Trevor Thornton explains nanotechnology at the 2018 Night of the Open Door while a visitor checks out a patterned wafer under an optical microscope.

Open Door is an annual event in which Arizona State University (ASU) invites the general public to visit all of its campuses to learn about the work and capabilities at the school. It is also a signature event of the Arizona SciTech Festival.

Our 2024 event attracted over 300 visitors.

Hands-on activities included the use of an optical microscope to view patterned wafers, real-time remote access to a scanning electron microscope to image samples with micro- and nanoscale features, as well as demos to illustrate the use of nanotechnology in paper money and producing stain resistant fabric.

LCNano, another research center within NCI-SW, provides complementary activities in another building.

Join us for the 2025 ASU Open Door on the Tempe Campus, Saturday, Feb. 22, 2025, 1-4 pm in Engineering Center G (ECG) Room 140.

Barrett Jackson STEM Fest

Barrett Jackson STEM Fest 2023.

STEM Fest was a one-day event held on Saturday, January 18, 2025, during the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction.

STEM Fest highlighted all of the Gearing Towards The Future winners and their projects, along with companies and organizations focused on STEM initiatives like SciTech Institute, NCI-SW, and MIRA SPARCQS.

Indigenous Peoples Day Phoenix Festival

Indigenous Peoples
Indigenous Peoples Day Phoenix Festival 2023.

Held annually at Margaret T. Hance Park in downtown Phoenix, Indigenous Peoples Day Phoenix Fest is a family-friendly environment in collaboration with Cahokia PHX – an Indigenous-led SocialTech and creative empowerment Artspace focused on equitable projects with individuals and organizations in the Downtown Phoenix area, specifically in the Roosevelt Row Arts District.

The event is held on the second Monday in October to honor indigenous American peoples and commemorate their histories and cultures. General admission to the event is free and includes access to the vendor market, food trucks, skateboard demos and competitions, community zones, Indigenous film screenings, and musical guests on the Main Stage.

Tempe’s annual STEAM Festival, Geeks Night Out, returns Wednesday March 26 from 5-7.30 p.m. at the Tempe Community Complex, 3500 S. Rural Road, Tempe AZ85282. Arizona SciTech Festival presents this signature event as a fusion of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM), offering a variety of interactive displays and hands-on activities.

ASU’s NCI-SW partners with Rio Salado College to share a booth at Geeks Night Out. Activities offered include the operation of a remotely accessible scanning electron microscope as well as the construction of solar cells and other demos to help attendees better understand the latest developments in nanoscience and energy technologies.

The event attracts visitors of all ages, making it a true K-to-Gray learning experience.

Lab Tours

Looking into the NanoFab, through one of its windows during a Lab Tour.

The staff of NCI-SW provides window tours of ASU laboratories in which research work at the nanometer-scale is carried out. These include the NanoFab (the cleanroom in which devices with nanoscale features are built), the Molecular Beam Epitaxy Lab (where ultra-thin films down to a single molecule in thickness are created), and more. The tours are suitable for those from middle school on up.
